The data described here provide information about target persons who either refused to take part in the study or dropped out of the study in the course of the Intake Assessment. The participant status of all those "contacted" within the study is also given.

A differentiation was made between those who were "contacted" and those who were "non- contactable". Non-contactable persons included the deceased, those who had moved without leaving a forwarding address, those who could not be reached at the address provided and those who had moved out of (West) Berlin. Information on these persons can be found in the Contact Protocol.

The sample of contacted persons includes all those who, on the basis of the introductory letter, were contacted directly, who answered the letter in writing, or with whom a contact was established via a relative or third party (e.g. acquaintance, neighbor, professional caregiver or residential home management), meaning that some form of information about their participation or non-participation in the study is available.

At Time 1 and in the interim follow-up (Time 2), data on dropout and participant status were primarily drawn from the Contact Protocol,the Observational Protocol, the Session Protocol and the Short Initial Assessment (Refusers Questionnaire) of the Intake Assessment. Reasons for refusal and termination were documented in detail by the interviewers. The Project Coordination Center later used this information to categorize the various reasons for non-participation.

From Time 2 onwards, all data on participant status, refusal, and termination were recorded in a newly introduced instrument, the Field Documentation.
